Friday June 20th was one exciting night. Literally, things got too HOT.

The night was just getting started when Larry Seurynck introduced Mr. Paul Asaro to play. Mr. Asaro wowed us all with his amazing ability at the piano. The upbeat music he played was the perfect atmosphere for a fun night at the Wood Fire. He played ragtime tunes and kept customers' toes tapping. Too soon after he had started playing, there was a bit of a commotion. Outside, someone had noticed a blaze coming from the upstairs window next door. Smoke was rolling out of the upstairs windows of the Wood Fire as well. After not too long, the police were outside followed shortly by the Dowagiac Fire Department. Luckily no smoke entered the restaurant, but all of the customers were asked to evacuate the building; police orders. Many cars were blocked in by the fire department, so we all stood back and watched the firemen work. Indian Lake Volunteer and Wayne Township firefighters added to the force against the blaze. It seemed as though half of Dowagiac were there to observe. We watched as the firefighters ran in and out of the building, water spewed out of the front windows next door, glass shattered, the fire turned to smoke, men ran in and out, and finally the smoke ceased to come from the Wood Fire windows. Again, we we very lucky that there was no damage, or very little, at the Wood Fire. After a few hours workers and customers were given the all clear to re-enter Wood Fire. Since Mr. Asaro's car was blocked in anyway, he played a few songs for the few most loyal Wood Fire patrons. Again, we were amazed by his quick fingers on the keys. There was time for a celebrity photo shoot and a few songs before everyone called it a night on this crazy night.
