About Us
Whether it's fine dining steeped in romance, or a funky night out with friends; it's warm and romantic at the Wood Fire!
"Guests who leave arm in arm smiling a "thank-you" mean everything to us. We believe that quality of life is not just in the food and live music performances; it's rooted in how we care for one another."
About the Building
Our building was erected in 1869 and first housed Bishops Hardware. In 2002 it had fallen into disrepair and began to collapse. The City of Dowagiac purchased the building rebuilt the roof and the storefront and made the interior of the building attractive for a retail business. We entered into an agreement with the City, tore out all of the interior modifications, and the fun began.
A New Beginning ...
We pounded the plaster from the walls to expose the structural brick walls. We then re-finished the original tin ceiling, sanded the floors and hand built everything in the restaurant except the chairs. All of the light wood is maple and the darker wood is mahogany. We used brick removed from the center wall to accommodate the kitchen to build the exterior of the oven. We also cut 1500 of the bricks in half and paved the rear hallways and restrooms.
The "Essence of Dowagiac"
The "essence of Dowagiac" was the guiding design principle. Small town romance flavored with a can-do sense of why-not? Dowagiac thrives: a beautifully restored downtown, a nationally recognized arts community, in a setting of picturesque lakes and orchards. "We give it all away", says Larry Seurynck. The warmth, care, and vibe that are apparent not just in the restaurant and performances of our musicians, but in the community, are a gift. Dowagiac is all about building community and a quality of life that too often seems to be lost.
